India (Hindi: भारत Bhārat), the largest country in South Asia, is one of the world's oldest civilisations with staggering cultural diversity. Once revered as 'the golden bird', India's cultural heritage is a rich amalgam of the past and present. The most populous nation in the world, India offers the traveller a view of fascinating religions, a smorgasbord of languages, diverse food, and architectural masterpieces that were built millennia ago and remain intact today. In addition to bustling cities like Delhi, Mumbai or Varanasi, India offers an incredible array of natural wonders like the breathtaking Kashmir Valley, the vast desert of Rajasthan, the rugged coasts of Goa, and the mighty Kangchenjunga. As the nation opens up to a globalised world, India still has a depth of history and intensity of culture that awe and fascinate the many who visit there.
