Mataró

Mataró is a lively Mediterranean port city of 131,000 people (2025) and capital of the Maresme region, on the coast just northeast of Barcelona. It combines long sandy beaches and a modern marina with a compact historic centre that preserves Roman remains from ancient Iluro, Baroque heritage around the Basilica of Santa Maria and notable Modernista works such as Gaudí’s Nau Gaudí and buildings by Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Today it is a medium‑sized commercial, cultural and university hub, well connected by train and road and active year‑round with festivals, markets and coastal leisure.
